Silent Disco at Jason Hackenwerth Animal Soul Exhibit at FIGat7th

Last Friday,  I let my kid stay up past her bedtime so we could attend this event.  “Silent clubbing,” or “Silent Disco” was a first for us, so I did not know what to expect.

FIGat7th

It’s been a long time since I’d been to FIGat7th, and it’s changed so much. Anchored by Target, Gold’s Gym, and Mendocino Farms, there’s a wide variety of popular eateries and retail shops. During the summer and throughout the year are fun and family-friendly events such as the “Animal Soul” exhibit by artist Jason Hackenwerth, and commissioned by Arts Brookfield.

Animal Soul by Jason Hackenwerth

copy from the Arts Brookfield site:

For the installation Animal Soul, Arts Brookfield has commissioned Hackenwerth to create three large-scale, internally lit, inflated sculptures based on his famous balloon designs. These sculptures tower over the viewer at 20 to 30 feet high and will be on view for nine days in downtown LA this Summer. Hackenwerth will also create two wearable sculptures made entirely of sewn balloons. These sculptures double as costumes and come to life when donned by dancers that navigate our ordinary world in their brightly hued balloon skin.

Animal Soul will sweep you into a fantastical world of giant, colorful, friendly creatures inspired as much by the magical, light-hearted persona of balloons as by the otherworldly creatures that exist within every imagination. Experience this installation from July 14 – July 22, 12 – 10 pm daily at FIGat7th and Wells Fargo Center in downtown Los Angeles and let your creativity run wild!

Silent Disco or Quiet Clubbing

This event’s “clubbing” was powered by Quiet Events and Nona Entertainment. When we checked in, we each received a pair of headphones. Each headphone has an on/off switch and three channels to choose from. Each channel lights up a different color (green, blue, or red), which corresponds to a particular “channel” for a different DJ. I remember my days of clubbing with friends, where we had to separate if we wanted to go to a particular room because of the DJ. With these headphones, you could still hang out with your friends without ever physically leaving them to hear a different song.

When the headphones are off, we saw a bunch of people having a good time in silence. With the headphones on, you join the party!

We all had a great time. The best part for me, was seeing my daughter progress from initially being scared of putting on the headphones, to not wanting to leave because she was having so much fun.
