A few weeks ago, we saw a special media screening for Storks and interviewed a few voice actors, the writer, producers, and director of the new family-friendly animated movie from Warner Brothers Pictures. Comedic heavy hitters (Andy Samberg, Kelsey Grammer, Key and Peele) are part of the diverse cast of characters but the one character who stole everyone’s heart doesn’t say one word. The Baby is gleeful in any situation she finds herself in. Her innocence and laughter is what makes everyone fall in love with her, not to mention how freaking adorable is.
About the movie
Storks is a movie about the wild adventures that take place when a stork up for a promotion (Junior, played by Andy Samberg) reluctantly decides go off-track to help his human friend Tulip deliver a baby to a family. In this story, storks no longer deliver babies (but deliver packages instead), so the mission is against protocol and they find themselves in a variety of sticky situations.
Director and writer Nicholas Stoller said at the blogger interview, “…this movie is a love letter to parenting and it’s a celebration of family.”
Producer Brad Lewis said,”…one of the messages…it’s that it used to be stop and smell the roses, but this is like let a baby affect your life. And even if it’s not a baby, if it’s some little moment of innocence or beauty, stop, take it in, enjoy it, and then get back on the train. That’s what you’re going to do, right? So, the movie is about allow yourself to get connected.”
About The Baby
Director and writer Nicolas Stoller: “…it was really important to me from the beginning that the baby be–this sounds so silly, but just be a baby, like never react to the scene and what’s happening. Like, no matter how dangerous the situation is, the baby’s constantly just looking around, has no idea.”
The Baby has pink hair, and in the movie you will see other babies with a wide variety of fun colorful mops. This was intentionally done to keep the movie lighthearted and fun. The baby is physically and mentally at the six month old mark, fresh from the “baby making machine” (an actual machine, mind you). Nicolas Stoller said, “…it just seemed like a six month old was the bull’s eye, because they can do stuff but they can’t really walk around. They’re not so young that they look like creatures from another planet.”
Family Diversity
Producer Brad Lewis: “The great thing about families, family comes in all shapes, sizes, every sort of orientation, every sort of racial–every culture, right? So, it was super intentional for us to be universal and make sure that everybody sees this movie as it’s an inclusive, family oriented movie.”
