Milk+Bookies is a charity that helps get books to kids who otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford them. They accomplish this a number of ways. Among them, local “book raisers,” fundraisers anyone can host, and their annual fundraiser, “Story Time Celebration,” which is held every spring in Los Angeles.

Recently, I was invited to this year’s event and am very excited to attend! Here are five reasons why:

It’s a SUPER BLOW OUT version of the “host your own” book-raiser and is a hot ticket in L.A.

The idea of hosting a “book-raiser” with friends is something i’d like to do one day, but why not see it thrown by the best of the best? Since the first Milk+Bookies‘ Story Time Celebration in 2010, this event has consistently sold out.

Celebrity Readers

Last year’s celebrity readers included: John Cho, B.J Novak, Lena Headey, Tamara MowryDave Koechner, Miranda Cosgrove, Jay Mohr, and Henry Winkler! This year’s readers have not been announced, but I’d love it if Lena Headley returned this year, and I’m sure my husband would love it if Dave Grohl read at this event!

Characters come to life

My daughter is obsessed with Tinkerbell right now, and can identify other storybook characters. We are currently reading  Hans Christian Andersen Fairy Tales, which we recently purchased at a library book sale. It will be really fun to see her reactions to the costumed characters at this event. Last year, they had Tinkerbell, Robin Hood, Captain Hook, Waldo, Alice in Wonderland, Harry Potter, Willy Wonka, Max from ‘Where the Wild Things Are,’ and Little Red Riding Hood.

Yummy Treats

Food and books?! Two of my favorite things in one place. I love sampling new things! Some food sponsors I’m looking forward to are: Thyme Cafe, Oven Mitt Cookies, McConnell’s Ice Cream, and Rise Up Coffee Roasters.

Teaching Kids Philanthropy

At Story Time Celebration, children are invited to the giving! Discover Books sponsors a bookstore at the event, where children can choose a book, write a personal message, and donate it back.  Milk + Bookies’ Leaders + Readers team will give these books to local children in Title 1 schools and in-need organizations in Los Angeles who do not have access to books of their own. It’s a great way to teach kids at an early age that giving is better than receiving, and this is a really fun way to do it!
