Milk + Bookies 8th Annual Story Time Celebration

Yesterday, my family and I attended the Milk + Bookies 8th Annual Story Time Celebration. Held at H.D. Buttercup at Helms Bakery in Culver City, the charity event transformed the unique interiors emporium into a food tasting area, arts and crafts section, bookstore, story time living room, and more – sprinkled with favorite storybook characters.

Upon entering, we were greeted with a (much needed) coffee cart from Coffee Commissary. I left my husband in the coffee line because my daughter spotted some storybook characters, who we absolutely had to meet. While we enjoyed brunch from Cast Iron Catering and Thyme Cafe and Market, Little Red Riding Hood visited our table. From our table, we heard Heroes actor Greg Grundberg read from his graphic novel Dream Jumper.

Later, we checked out the book store section, where you could purchase any book for $10, which you could keep or donate.

Of course an event thrown by Milk + Bookies has to have milk and cookies, so we found exactly that in the desserts area. The “milk” was actually a vegan milk alternative, made out of peas by a company called Ripple. Ripple is nut, gluten, & lactose free and is 100% vegan, which makes it ideal for a friend of mine, whose child has nut allergies. Mrs. Thinsters was the cookie sponsor, and thankfully because I’m currently on a diet, I treated myself to two thin, crispy, crunchy chocolate chip cookies.

After we scoped out more of the cool furnishings in H.D. Buttercup, we sat down to listen to more stories. It was quite a treat to hear Henry Winkler, “The Fonz” read from his children’s book, Always Watch Out for the Potato Salad! and to see my favorite T.V. mom, Julie Bowen read on stage.

Milk+Bookies Story Time Celebration 8 ended with my husband and daughter enjoying some yummy ice cream from the McConnell’s truck in the parking lot of Helms Bakery. It was a fun day for us, and a wonderful way to spend a special Sunday!

Keep the next Story Time Celebration on your radar!
