5 Reasons Why You Should Attend UBC Mom’s Parenting Group

coffee_momsgroup

A few of my friends finally had a chance to attend UBC Mom’s Group today, and I’m so happy they did! UBC Mom’s Group, is also known as “Westwood Mom’s Group,” or “Raising Mom’s Up.”  I found out about it two years ago on Meetup.com (where it’s listed as “Westwood Moms Meetup“) when I was a brand-new mom, looking for a place to connect with other moms. UBC Mom’s Group is a great group of moms, led by the wonderful Rebecca Brooks, mother of four boys! I love that I see familiar faces every “term,” and enjoy meeting new members!

Here are 5 reasons why you should check it out:

It’s a Parenting Class with Friends

This is a parenting class where moms discuss different topics to help with child-rearing and family relationships. It’s been a Godsend to me because it’s a safe place where I don’t feel alone in my struggles. This session (September 30 – November 18, 2015) touches on topics from the following books (reading not required): No Drama Discipline; Mind in the Making: The Seven Essential Life Skills Every Child Needs. Everyone brings food to share, and there’s time to chat and get to know the other moms. It’s a great way make new friends!

Veteran Moms

As a first-time mom, I have so many questions! I’m so thankful for the veteran moms in the group, who freely share their parenting experiences. Whether their child is several years or only a few months older than my daughter, I look to them for advice. This session, there is a mom in attendance who is also a grandmother! Talk about experienced!

Child Care where you know the other moms

One of the best things about UBC Mom’s Parenting Group is the child care! From 10:00am – noon, moms relax, learn, and enjoy refreshments while children are cared for by wonderful, background-checked caretakers. There is a nursery for children under 2 years old, and preschool for those aged 2 and above. It’s comforting to know the moms of the other children your kid is interacting with and the close proximity (a 30 second walk down the hall) is a good way slowly and safely test or deal with separation.

Expert Guest Speakers

Last week, Susan Stone spoke to our group on the topic of over-indulging your child. She is a licensed marriage and family therapist who also specializes in parent coaching and stress management. She the author of the book “The Indulgence Trap – When too  much is not Enough!” We were treated to a very informative discussion!

Kids Item Swap

Twice a year, we do a kid’s item swap. We bring the toys and clothes our kids outgrew and exchange them with our fellow mom friends who can use them. Everything that isn’t claimed is donated to the wonderful local non-profit Harvest Home, which helps transform the lives of homeless pregnant women and their children by providing housing, support, and programs that equip women to become great mothers.
