What I learned from the Christina Tosi Event at WeWork Burbank

On Tuesday, I attended an event at WeWork Burbank – A special evening with Christina Tosi, the mastermind behind the cult favorite bakery, Milk Bar. We screened her episode of Chef’s Table: Pastry, with a Q&A after moderated by Jenn Harris of the L.A. Times.

I’ve known about Milk Bar since it opened in New York in 2008. Foodie friends would bring me these amazing cookies from their trips to New York City. I’m such a fan of The Compost Cookie, it’s all I will buy despite the other delicious cookie flavor combinations offered. I asked my brother for the Momofuku Milk Bar Cookbook for Christmas when it came out in 2011, but have yet to complete a recipe. Why? Because it’s very involved and thankfully, with Milk Bar becoming more accessible (I travel to D.C. a couple times a year), I can purchase these delectable treats! Even closer will be the L.A. (West Hollywood to be exact) West Coast flagship Milk Bar (opening before the end of 2018), which for me, means more time working out.

Compost cookie is unlike anything you’ve ever tasted

I loved The Chef’s Table: Pastry Episode about Christina Tosi. She grew up baking, with her grandmother and mother. She was dedicated and motivated in everything she did, which you could see at an early age – she excelled in school and won baking contests. What really inspired me was her ability to make big decisions based on knowing her true feelings. She made a big move to New York, enrolled in culinary school, and worked a variety of jobs to the level where she was at the pinnacle of her career. Her resilience and ability to dig deeper led her to a different path, which eventually got her to where she is today – the celebrity pastry chef and mastermind behind Milk Bar. Her humbleness is genuine, even when retelling the story about how she thought the call from Chef’s Table to feature her was a mistake.

Here are some highlights I recorded from the interview:

Christina is very open about her love of junk food. It’s difficult to dwindle down her favorites.

Milk Bar Los Angeles is going to be AMAZING

I’m really excited about Milk Bar Los Angeles! it sounds like quite the wonderland, and a place to bring people together.

So nice meeting you, Christina!
Thank you for signing my Momofuku Milk Bar book!

I enjoyed meeting and chatting with Christina afterwards. She is very down-to-earth and easy to talk to. We even have a couple things in common – we both went to High School in Northern Virginia and we both love The Rock (Dwayne Johnson).

P.S. I will get around to completing a recipe…one day.
