Club MomMe SpringFest Recap

On Saturday, June 7th, 2014, my family and I attended Club MomMe‘s OC Spring Family Fest at the Hyatt Regency Resort & Spa in Huntington Beach. It was a fantastic event, and we had a great time. Here is a recap of our day.

The Venue

First of all, the venue is gorgeous. The lawn held most of the vendors and was right across the street from the beach. The Hyatt Regency Resort & Spa is a destination I would choose to stay at if I was a visitor to Southern California, even if it was just for one night.

At the media breakfast, I met some fellow bloggers who were also covering the event. As a stay-at-home mom, it was great to meet other people “in my world.” I met Laura Clark of the blog, L.A. Story, and sat with Kari Robinson of Mommy to Elodie. Kari has been blogging for over 3 years, and was so kind to answer my questions and give advice. Another fun mom I met is Stacie Burrows, of Mommy Tonk, an L.A.based musical comedy duo.

Dr. Harvey Karp

I was really excited to see Dr. Harvey Karp speak. Like most first-time-parents, friends introduced me to The Happiest Baby on the Block DVD. I’m so glad I watched it when I did. The “5 S’s” saved my sanity so many times. Dr. Harvey Karp is a celebrity in the parenting world. You can tell by the smile on my face in the photo, I felt lucky to meet and chat with him.  Not only did he give great advice to parents of babies AND toddlers, but he answered my audience question – “Is there a trick to getting your child to behave at a restaurant?” Humorously, he answered, “next question,” but said it’s all about building patience in your child (which he addresses in The Happiest Toddler book). Some take-aways from his talk about toddlers:

  • Anxiety is the worst kind of depression for parents
  • We are the most educated but least experienced parents in history
  • Children have an immature left brain, so we need to learn how to speak their language
  • Parents usually stop reading books and doing research after planning FOR the baby; the toddler years are JUST AS IMPORTANT to continue educating ourselves
  • Social relationships for children are very important, and those with experience are valuable assets

I’m definitely going to watch The Happiest Toddler DVD and read The Happiest Toddler book ASAP!

I got to the food line late, but was happy and pleased with what was available. Taco bar! There were also sliders and gourmet cheese (which I missed), and beer available. Dessert was delicious too – chocolate covered strawberries, mini éclairs, chocolate chip cookies, and brownies to name a few. Coffee (yes!!!) and water were available throughout the day.

Entrepreneurship for Parents Panel

I arrived to this a little late, but what I was able to see, I really enjoyed. Rachel Olsen moderated the panel, which consisted of: Julie Feldman (Bella Bundles), Shelly Ehler (ShowNo Towels), Francine Michelle (Filmmaker), R. DeDe Soto (Soto Law Group), Sonia Kang (Mixed-Up Clothing), and Jason Silverberg (Nabthat).

My take-aways from this panel:

  • Start your morning with quiet meditation to help you conquer the day
  • Be happy where you are, acknowledge your accomplishments, and set long and short goals
  • Celebrate small victories – personal and professional
  • Be in the moment
  • Do stuff for yourself
  • Live your life with passion and purpose
  • Listen to the voice inside you
  • ACT upon the voice that you hear
  • Don’t let FEAR stop you from ACTING
  • Set realistic expectations and have PATIENCE
  • When doing business with ANYONE, especially when it comes to money, GET IT IN WRITING to save your relationship

I wish I had more time to check out all the vendors, but my daughter didn’t nap and was about to lose it. The ones I did see and meet were very friendly and helpful. Below are some photos, but you can also check out more by searching for the hashtag #springfest on Instagram or on Facebook.

Thank You

Thank you, Rachel Pitzel and Aubrye Foote of Club MomMe for inviting us to an amazing event. I wouldn’t have met you if it wasn’t for Melinda and Elizabeth of Baby Boot Camp Los Angeles (Culver City and Marina Del Rey). I’m grateful to know a fantastic community of Moms who are now part of my village.

I am a new mom to a baby girl. I live in West Los Angeles. This blog is about my experiences as a new mom and navigating my way through kid-friendly L.A.
