Days 4 and 5 of fitness challenge

I didn’t have time to post on this blog yesterday, but I managed to keep my instagram feed current with my meals and a workout photo. So, here is a summary of yesterday and today.

Day 4/35

Breakfast

I was really tired of having eggs everyday, and I couldn’t think of what to eat. I know I should have eaten something more substantial, but an orange and two baby bananas had to do. My daughter ate a baby banana and a ricotta pancake, which I was so tempted take a bite out of, but didn’t.

Lunch

For lunch, I heated up some spicy tuna cakes from the fridge, which I made a few days prior. My friend Ashley recommended the recipe to me from Nom Nom Paleo, and I’m so glad she did! These are like “poor man’s crab cake,” are easy to make, and you can just throw them in the freezer so you can heat them up whenever you want (or are too lazy, like I am, to cook). I also had a side salad of spring mix from Trader Joe’s and drizzled some olive oil, balsamic vinegar, and a squirt of lemon.

Dinner

Dinner was a prepared salad from Trader Joe’s – Honey Glazed Miso Salmon on Salad Greens. It’s not my favorite prepared salad from Trader Joe’s, but it’s what my husband bought and I agreed to have it. I also threw in an avocado, because avocados are delicious on everything.

Workout

Aria’s face: “You’ve got to be kidding me, mom!”

There wasn’t a Baby Boot Camp (Los Angeles – Culver City and Marina Del Rey) class that day, but trainers Melinda and Elizabeth e-mailed our class members “homework” in case we wanted to work out on our own. I met up with one of the moms and her toddler at a park and we exercised together. I’m so glad she was up for working out, because it helped keep me on track. This is what we did (our modifications are in parentheses because we didn’t have a chair or wall handy to use):

Perform each exercise for 30 seconds with a 10 second rest in-between exercises. Repeat 3x

  1. Jumping jacks
  2. Wall sit / (Chair Pose)
  3. Push-up
  4. Abdominal crunch
  5. Step-up onto chair / (Reverse Lunge)
  6. Squat
  7. Triceps dip on chair / (on ground)
  8. Plank
  9. High knees
  10. Lunge
  11. Push-up rotation
  12. Side plank

Fun

My husband arrived home in time for me to go out to see my friend Leslie perform at Bootleg HiFi! Luckily, my friend Parisa was able to meet up with me at last minute, so I would have some company. If you get a chance, check out Leslie Stevens at one of her shows around LA. Her musician facebook page has up-to-date information on performances. Her voice echoes Dolly Parton‘s and her sound is indie, country, folk. I know that’s not a very good description of it, but you may have heard her music playing at your local Starbucks. It was so nice to be out. I was good and didn’t drink any alcohol, as tempting as it was.

Day 5/35

Breakfast

Back to eggs. Couldn’t be creative because I had to get our stuff ready for the beach!

Lunch

This photo is from my second lunch of the same thing. The first lunch was at the beach, from a cooler, in a plastic bag. Not too pretty to photograph, nor did I have time to because I was enjoying the beach and taking care of my daughter. When I got home, I took the items out of the cooler and ate them on a plate, which is pictured below.

Dinner

Dinner was leftovers from “Day 2.” I found Coconut Aminos from Sprouts on Westwood. I’m so glad I did, because I sprinkled it on my leftovers and it made a huge difference in the taste. Coconut aminos is a flavorful liquid to replace soy sauce. It’s what I was missing when I originally made my variation of the recipe from Nom Nom Paleo.

Fun

We went to Zuma beach today to celebrate a friend’s (a fellow mom!) birthday. It was a lot of fun, and I’m glad we went when we did (we arrived around 10:40am), because it started to get packed around noon. We left a little before 2pm, which was good, because traffic wasn’t too terrible. I love Zuma beach, and when you have to haul a lot of stuff, including a kid (the reason for all the stuff you have to haul), it’s worth it to just pay the parking fee to have the car close to the sand.

Workout

Finally, at almost 9pm, I worked out. I didn’t have a chance to do it during the day and it would have been so easy to just say I’ll just skip it today, but I did it. Here is what Baby Boot Camp (Los Angeles – Culver City and Marina Del Rey) trainers Melinda and Elizabeth gave us to do:

Perform each exercise for 30 seconds with a 10 second rest in-between exercises. Repeat 3x

  1. Biceps curl
  2. Side lunge
  3. Shoulder Shrug
  4. Burpees
  5. Calf raises – up and down on toes
  6. Lat pull-down (w/ band) – pull band down to chest
  7. Triceps dip – on floor
  8. Punch jacks – hands near chest, punch up when jumping legs out
  9. Plank
  10. Bridge
  11. Crunch – knees touch elbow, hold for 2 breaths
  12. Side plank

So that’s about it. I took my second shower of the day, was going to cook and prepare some food for tomorrow, but I’m pooped! Baby Boot Camp Class tomorrow! #westsidemommygetfit
