Fitness Friday: Hiking

It’s Fitness Friday!  Melinda and Elizabeth of Baby Boot Camp Los Angeles (Culver City and Marina Del Rey) answer this week’s question:

Q. How can I get the most out of a hike?

Hiking is a great way to bring fitness to the whole family. Even small children can participate. If you have a smaller child, bring along a carrier. This will give you added weight, which will help you get more from your hike and allow you to go an extra mile or two. Hiking is a great cardio and strength-building workout. Here are some ideas to add some extra fitness into your hikes:

1. Change your pace. Add some cardio bursts into your hike, by making your pace a bit more brisk than just walking. This will get your heart rate up, but not have you tire out too soon.

2. Set your timer and do 1 minute of walking lunges in-between brisk walking. You can also pick a tree in the distance and lunge to it! When you are done, add some squats!

3. Stop at benches along the way or find a big rock, and do 10 tricep dips and 10 pushups!

There’s a lot of great hiking in Los Angeles, for all different fitness levels, anywhere from less than 1 mile to 7 miles and beyond. Here’s a great website, to pick your next trail:

Don’t forget to have fun, and take in the scenery!  Maybe you’ll see some deer, too!
