“Funbox” Experience now open at Westfield Santa Anita
I’ve been to several “selfie” pop-up exhibits, but none of them were as kid-friendly as “Funbox“. I was invited recently to FUNBOX as a member of the media to this toy-centered, kid-minded experience.
My daughter saw it as a playground, I saw it as a place to get really fun pictures for a photo album. I am glad we were able to experience it on a weekend, so my husband could join us, because we rarely take fun photos of the entire whole family.
It’s difficult to decide which room is my favorite, because they were all super-cute and a lot of fun. There are over 24 art installations and exhibits at FUNBOX, created by artists and engineers from all over the world. If you count the number of pieces that make up FUNBOX, it’s over 100,000 individual items!
What’s unique about this pop-up experience is it gives back to the community. 25-year old FUNBOX creator Anthony Nieves, was inspired to create his dream through conversations with his nine younger siblings, who have been in the foster care system throughout their childhood. This is why all FUNBOX locations will support a small, localized community charity that advocates and supports children in foster care. The Westfield Santa Anita location benefits RaisingHOPE, which provides advocacy, awareness and funds to abused and neglected children, many of whom are or were in the foster care system, in the Ventura County area through community events, mentoring and legal services.
There are two interactive, “take of your shoes” experiences at FUNBOX – a ball pit, and a cereal pit, both equally fun. The staff allows a certain amount of guests to play the pit for five minutes at a time. If you have a little one, I suggest you get in there with them, especially for the ball pit, because it’s easy to “sink”.
Other interactive “keep your shoes on” experiences include a balloon room, where there are air ducts and balloons flying every which way; a mini “Infinity Room” with blue lighting and funky mirrors on the walls and ceiling; a “Dance Room” complete with music and shine; and a “Simpsons” style room, where you can flip your image to look like you are standing on the ceiling.
