On Tuesday, my daughter and I attended the Charity Fundraiser and World Premiere of Sgt. Stubby: An American Hero – a CG animated heart-warming family movie based on the epic true story of America’s most decorated dog.
The beneficiary was Variety – The Children’s Charity of Southern California. 500 children and their families from Boys & Girls Club of Boyle Heights attended.
The event was hosted by Fun Academy Studios, the producers of the film. Sgt. Stubby features the voices of Logan Lerman (Fury, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Percy Jackson & The Olympians), Helena Bonham Carter (the upcoming Ocean’s 8, the Harry Potter films, The King’s Speech, Sweeney Todd) and Gérard Depardieu (Life of Pi, Cyrano De Bergerac, The Man in the Iron Mask, Green Card).
Stubby was a stray dog that made its way into the Army’s “Yankee” Division with wits and charm by convincing private First Class Robert Conroy to unofficially adopt him. Eager to please, he trained alongside the unit and won everyone over, including the colonel.
The ever-resourceful Stubby managed to get to the front lines in World War I and earn his keep. He alerted medics to wounded soldiers buried in battle; saved an entire company and town from a lethal gas attack; and even caught a German spy.
Stubby earned his stripes and the title of “Sergeant” through his heroic efforts and remains the most decorated dog in history.
This is a movie to watch with your children that can spark thoughtful conversations about war, compassion, heavy emotions, and loss.
Opening April 13 on approximately 3,000 screens across the U.S. and Canada and coinciding with the year-long 100th commemoration of the United States’ role in the “War to End All Wars,” Sgt. Stubby was directed by award-winning documentarian Richard Lanni in his feature film debut.
