Today, my daughter and I watched a special screening of “Pandas,” an IMAX original documentary. My kid was thrilled when I told her it was narrated by Kristen Bell, the voice of “Anna” from Disney’s Frozen.
In “Pandas,” we are introduced to an adorable nursery, research, and breeding center for pandas in China. In an effort to introduce captivity-bred pandas to the wild, Hou Rong, director of research, seeks out the expertise of New Hampshire-based Ben Kilham. Kilham has successfully raised orphaned black bear cubs into the wild for the last twenty years. The one to execute this task becomes the job of American conservation biologist Jake Owens and Chinese wildlife biologist Wen Lei Bi.
Over the course of the journey to introduce captivity-bred Qian Quan, we revel in the cuddly-ness of pandas while realizing the harsh reality of their endangered status. The documentary points out the strength of the panda’s jaws and power of their large bodies. The sweetest thing to see is the trusting relationships built between humans and animal.
Through this documentary, we learn that there is a long and difficult road ahead to keep the panda population on the map. Awareness and action are just a few of the steps we can take to save these beautiful and adorable creatures.
We really enjoyed watching this documentary and hope to visit Chengdu Panda Base one day. Until then, we want to spread the word and encourage everyone to watch “Pandas”!

At Chengdu Panda Base in China, scientists are taking the captive breeding program to the next level and preparing captive-born cubs for the wild. This film follows one such researcher, whose passion leads her to initiate a new technique inspired by a black bear rehabilitator in rural New Hampshire. What starts as a cross-cultural collaboration becomes a life-changing journey for one special panda named Qian Qian. The film, captured with IMAX® cameras, follows Qian Qian on an exciting new adventure into the mountains of Sichuan as she experiences nature for the first time and discovers her wild side.
