“Tully” Movie Review

Last week, I watched a special screening of the movie “Tully“, at an event hosted by Refinery29 in Culver City. The pre-party was at The Culver Hotel, and the screening was at Arclight Culver City.

Tully stars Charlize Theron as Marlo, a mom of three. She is pregnant with the third at the beginning of the movie, then shots of the monotonous routine of caring for a newborn follow. Marlo’s oldest is a girl and a bookworm, but still has the spirit of a child, while her second is a “spirited child”. Marlo loses it at one of her too-familiar meetings at the school office of her children’s private school when the administrator uses every politically correct adjective in the book to describe her son Jonah’s behavior.

At that point, Marlo finally takes her wealthy brother’s gift of a night nanny, and we are introduced to Tully, played by Mackenzie Davis. From that point on, her life gradually changes to make Marlo feel like the mother she wished she was.

This movie is a must-see for moms. It’s completely relatable whether you have one, two, or more children. It’s what a person goes through when you care so much but have little left in you and need to recharge. It’s how we all need our “village”, and a friend to talk to. It shows how the spousal divide deepens after children, and how ignoring it can be the easy option, but not necessarily the best.

While most would see it as a “chick flick”, to commiserate the tribulations of motherhood, I say it’s something you should see twice. Once, with your mom-friends, then a second time with your domestic partner. I remember the earlier days of parenting when my husband and I didn’t know what to do or talk about when we had our “once-in-a-blue-moon” date night. It’s easy to say you “don’t want to talk about the kid” during that time, but watching a movie like Tully is a “keeping it real” moment that will lead to a better relationship of understanding.

See this movie. It does a really great job of portraying the realities of marriage and parenting in a very relatable way.
