Event Recap: LEGO McLaren 720s Build Day at Petersen Automotive Museum

The following was written by WestsideMommy.com contributor Maria Aldana, who attended the event on behalf of Westside Mommy. She is owner of self-care product website, EarlGreyStyle.com, and children’s clothing brand The Sweet Potatoe. She attended this fun event with her son.

With my son’s obsessions for cars and Legos, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to attend the Lego McLaren 720s Build Day event at the Petersen Automotive Museum. My son was excited from the moment we entered the museum, where we took the elevator to the second floor where the life-sized Lego McLaren 720s was showcased.

Design your own McLaren

One of the first things we did was design and print our own Lego Speed Champions McLaren using the interactive iPad app. It was really cool to see my son’s design printed on a sticker. He also received a little Lego figure of a car mechanic!

Learning about McLaren

One of the highlights of the event was listening to McLaren’s Head of Design Operations, Mark Robert. He presented a brief video of the history and design process of the vehicle. It made me want to jump in the car and take it for a ride – Lego or not! Another speaker during the panel discussion was Lego Master Builder, Chris Steininger. He discussed the whole process of building the McLaren 720s with Legos and revealed the approximate number of pieces used to create this car. Can you guess? They used more than 280,000 Lego pieces!

Building Time!

After the panel discussion, it was time to build! All the kiddos and some adults joined in by grabbing some orange Lego pieces and added it to the grey area of the car. It surely was a fun experience for all the kids who participated!
