Several years ago, I signed up to become a mentor with the Fulfillment Fund. My mentee was Kimberly, a freshman at Gertz-Ressler High School in East L.A. It was a rewarding experience and a fantastic program I’m so happy I participated in. I got to know Kimberly through our hang-out meetings – we went to the beach, checked out different parts of L.A. like Little Tokyo, went to comedy shows and other Fulfillment Fund sponsored events, and I introduced her to Umami Burger (one of her favorite and most memorable excursions). Last year, she graduated high school (and the Fulfillment Fund program) and started college. She was no longer my mentee, but we kept in touch through Facebook and text. It was great to see her adjusting to college life in another state! She is home for the summer, and we hung out today. She even took care of my daughter at the park so I could get my hair cut! I am proud of what an intelligent, grounded, and responsible young woman she is, and grateful she wanted to keep in touch and do me that favor. She has ambition and a very good head on her shoulders – much more than I ever did at that age. I hope she is representative of her generation, because that gives me hope that my daughter will have people like her in charge.
We were so busy catching up, I forgot to take a photo of us today. Here is a picture of us from the Fulfillment Fund graduation brunch last year:
