Now that I’m back from my trip, it’s time to work off my vacation weight. Not staying active was the biggest mistake I made while on vacation. Sure, it’s easy to avoid exercise on a weekend getaway, but I was out of town for several weeks. Not working out is part of relaxing, isn’t it? NOPE. Well I found out the hard way – hearing news about terrible things happening in the world got to me, which led to increased anxiety. Exercise combats anxiety and depression, so it’s your best bet for physical and mental well-being.
Before my trip, I worked out for an hour at least three times a week. During my trip, I did some recreational fitness activities (cardio dance class, kayaking, biking, and hiking), but nothing too intense. The heat and humidity paired with my lack of motivation was a recipe for disaster.
Solo or Social?
Some people, like my brother, prefer to work out alone. I, on the other hand, am motivated to exercise in a social setting. The first class that helped me get out of my post-pregnancy funk was Baby Boot Camp Los Angeles (Culver City and Marina Del Rey). Here, I met women who were in a similar situation as me. It helped me tremendously to talk to other moms, make new friends, and more importantly, get out of the house. I could take my kid to class, which made it worthwhile for her too. Exercising socially also helps make it a habit.
Find or do a similar routine
Keeping a routine – like working out first thing in the morning – will keep you in check on your trip. Owners and trainers Melinda and Elizabeth of Baby Boot Camp Los Angeles (Culver City and Marina Del Rey) post a workout on the group’s private Facebook page when a class is cancelled. Baby Boot Camp is a franchise, and most owners will allow a vacationing client to take a class at their discretion. Melinda and Elizabeth are great and welcome clients to bring their out of town guests to class. First class is always free!
Pack your Sneakers (or buy a new pair)
I have wide feet, so I’m particular about the sneakers I wear to work out. Brooks and New Balance brands fit my feet best. I made the mistake of assuming I had comparable sneakers at my parent’s house, and used an old pair of Sketchers fashion sneakers which were ill-fitting, and probably damaged my feet. I should have used it as an opportunity to buy a new pair, because my present ones are probably due for a change anyway. (read: When to Replace Running Shoes)
Set a Timer and Work in 30
Find 30 minutes of activity per day – whether it’s a walk, a jog, a swim, or even leg lifts! I’m going to keep a daily alarm on my phone to remind myself to “Work in 30.” I can’t change the past, but I can work on better habits for the future!
