Shelby’s Birthday Bash at Tae Ryong Brentwood

Last weekend, Westside Mommy contributor Shelby celebrated her 10th birthday at Tae Ryong Taekwondo School Brentwood!

I just had my birthday. I turned 10 and it was THE BEST BIRTHDAY PARTY EVER!

My Mom and Dad rented out Tae Ryong taekwondo studio in Brentwood….it’s huge! One of the things I did that was so cool was break a board with an axe kick. It was so great showing all my friends I could do it!

The party was dance themed and my parents hired a company called Funky Divas and Dudes. Two ladies came and did so much – painted glitter makeup on our faces like eye makeup, stars, hearts, peace signs, sprayed temporary hair color in our hair (I chose pink) and taught us a dance routine for the song (I picked “Party in the USA”). It was so awesome!!! We also did a few fun party games with prizes (Provided by Funky Divas and Dudes). Everyone got gifts from them – headbands, sparkle microphones, pom-pom on sticks and disco ball necklaces. We also gave everyone a CD of my favorite songs.

From all this, I learned two things:

  1. YOU SHOULD TOTALLY GO TO ANY PARTY THAT HAS FUNKY DIVAS AND DUDES, and
  2. YOU SHOULD TOTALLY DO TAE RYONG!!! BEST BIRTHDAY EVER WITH A CAPITAL B!!!

My lovely (sassy and probably hormonal) daughter turning 10 meant party planning time! We are not a family who does parties every year; we do big ones for 5, 10 & 16. So, I knew we had to go fabulous and fun, as she’s getting older and wiser.

So, my friend (who oddly, has sons) recommended Funky Divas and Dudes for party entertainment. She attended a boy-girl twins’ party and said they were “top-notch.” I did some research and they had great reviews. So, I called them to inquire about prices, dates and the such.

Well, I must admit, they were pretty much out of our budget. But as I thought about it, I wanted my daughter’s first birthday in the double digits to be wonderful and fun. Ten was really the most memorable birthday party milestone I remember from my own childhood. So we splurged, which is a super big deal for me. I don’t like to call myself cheap (I always tip 20% unless the service is truly terrible; our family gives plenty to charity AND are involved in loads of community service), but being a stay-at-home mom is no easy task these days. As many of you know, each dollar has to be somewhat analyzed.

So, we dipped into savings and gave our daughter (and 21 of her friends) the 10th B-Day party of a lifetime.

IT WAS AMAZING! Honestly, there are no regrets. I believe every young gal there would say it was the best (or at least one of the best) parties they had ever been to. It was worth every penny!

The games were creative and all the gals bonded so quickly. This can always be a concern, as quite a few of them didn’t know the others, and we didn’t want anyone to feel left out. Thankfully, they bonded quickly and I’m pretty sure new (possible lifetime) friendships were made.

Also, we rented out Tae Ryong taekwondo school in Brentwood, where my daughters take class. It has about 40 underground, easy parking spots. It’s located in the heart of Brentwood, is spacious, super clean and has a side room (with a TV that can be used for movies) for younger siblings. My husband and I were so pleased with our choice! It was the perfect location and made the event look so grand.

In closing, planning my children’s birthday parties in the past has not always been a success. However, this one was a real winner. So, if your kids are into games and music, I really think you cannot go wrong with these options!
