During my travels and “me-cations”<\/a> this summer, I read\u00a0All the Women in My Family Sing<\/em><\/strong><\/a>. It’s\u00a0an anthology written by women of color from various backgrounds who share their personal stories and experiences about immigration, self-identity, career, justice, beauty, and more.\u00a0Contributors you may recognize include: America Ferrera, Samina Ali, Natalie Baszile (Queen Sugar), Porochista Khakpour (Sons and Other Flammable Objects), Lalita Tademy (Cane River), Mila Jam, Marian Wright Edelman (Children’s Defense Fund).<\/p>\n

It was a great read, format-wise, because the time I had to read was sporadic. Definitely good for moms with busy schedules! As a woman of color, I could relate to many of the stories of the internal and external struggle. Reading these stories was insightful, and I felt a camaraderie with these women I’d never met. Growing up as a second-generation American, it was always difficult to convey my feelings of “difference” to my parents. Because they went through “the struggle” at the worst times to give their children a better life, I always felt guilty about complaining. I could definitely relate to many of the experiences in All the Women in My Family Sing<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, and dog-eared more than one essay to share with a friend.<\/p>\n

All the Women in My Family Sing<\/a>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>should be a book introduced early in life – to inspire, motivate, and celebrate women to appreciate and understand who they are and who they can be. It will spark and encourage conversations that will ignite future leaders, trailblazers, and stronger women overall.<\/p>\n
