Yesterday, my daughter and I walked to the polls to vote. On our way home, she told me she wanted to eat at a restaurant. I told her I already had shrimp and broccoli at home I was planning\u00a0to make for dinner. She was insistent on eating out. That’s when I used our 15 minute walk as an opportunity to teach a lesson. My four-year old repeats back things I say to her, so I assume even if what I have to say is over her head at the moment, it might stick later. Hence, my long-winded conversations with her. I talked about how it costs money to eat at restaurants and that we don’t always have the money to do it. I told her about how we have to work hard to earn money, and how the amount is limited, so we try to spend it on things we need, versus things we want. I discussed the importance of learning how to cook food and do things on your own. When we got home, I told her I was going to prepare dinner. She told me she wanted to cook, and proceeded to take the eggs out of the fridge, assuming she was going to make scrambled eggs for herself. Realizing she didn’t know how to use the stove, I told her she could still cook but using things we can eat raw. She found a tomato in the fridge, and decided she would make a salad.
