categories: memoir, autobiography, and humor
Since the birth of my second child, I’ve been reading a lot on my Kindle during breast pumping sessions. Thanks to recommendations from friends, President Obama’s reading list of 2018, and a variety of other resources, I enjoyed and recommend the following books in the memoir, autobiography, and humor categories:

Becoming – Michele Obama
BECOMING by Michelle Obama is a great book, not just because she was the first Lady, but because of how she lives her life. I particularly liked reading about how her mom was an advocate for her and her brother’s education, putting it first, eventually leading to both of them attending Stanford. Michelle was a rule-follower and achieved so much. Her confidence is inspirational and her candidness in the book is relatable. Her story is about more than about being Mrs. Obama, it is also about being a mom, woman, and daughter. As a mom of daughters myself, it was helpful to read about her values and how she impressed them on her daughters. I highly recommend this book, especially for middle and high school girls to show them the possibilities in life.
Educated: A Memoir – Tara Westover
EDUCATED, a Memoir, by Tara Westover is an unbelievably inspirational true story. Started off a little slow for me, but after a couple chapters, I was hooked. There are so many WTF moments, which made ME feel like such a sheltered person, having grown up in a completely different environment than hers. Her challenges, achievements, experiences, and familial relationships formed her tough and unique mindset. Reading her story was definitely eye-opening for me. It made me feel truly grateful for the contrasting environment I grew up in, yet also lazy for not fully taking advantage of the opportunities given to me. I definitely recommend this book. It’s a fantastic read.
The Last Black Unicorn – Tiffany Haddish
THE LAST BLACK UNICORN by Tiffany Haddish had me in stitches from the beginning. I enjoyed reading this book so much, I kind of want to get the audiobook just to hear her voice. She went through so much, yet consistently used her humorous outlook on life to get her through the rough times. This book has me hooked on her as a comedian and person and now I want to watch everything with her in it.
#IMOMSOHARD
Kristin and Jen are hilarious women, who “keep it real” throughout this book. Just like the web videos which broke them into internet fame, and their stage show, #IMOMSOHARD the book is completely relatable on so many levels. I actually met Jen several years ago when our kids attended the same school. I had no idea back then that she was this comedic firecracker, until late in the school year. They celebrate mom-hood and love on moms in general. We definitely need more of their positive and supportive vibes out in the world.
