Cookie Good in Santa Monica offers creative and nostalgic treats

My family and I were invited to try out the new “Back to School” flavors, inspired by lunchbox favorites, at COOKIE GOOD, a dessert bakery in Santa Monica. COOKIE GOOD offers a wide array of cookie flavors, with special limited edition runs. The “Back to School” flavors are available until September 15th (this Saturday), but some favorites are usually in the rotation.

Thankfully, my husband, daughter, and some friends partook in the sampling (sharing the love…and the calories). Here are our thoughts on the indulgent experience:

Blueberry Muffin

This was delicious! It tasted like the top of a gourmet blueberry muffin (which is obviously the best part) with sugary crumble topping.

Caramel-Pretzel-Chocolate Chunk

I love the salty-sweet combination of this cookie. It’s quite decadent and the pretzel crunch balances out the delicious gooeyness.

Cheetos

This is one of the cookies people hear about (through social media) and want to try. It definitely tastes and is the bright color of a Cheeto, but with and interesting sweet bite combined with it. If you normally enjoy Cheetos (or did as a kid like I did), you will want to try this cookie!

Chocolate Chip Granola Bar

This cookie is more chocolate than it is granola…as it should be! I like how it’s more chewy than it is sticky. My husband said it reminded him of a Quaker brand granola bar.

Circus Animal

This is the cookie I did not try, because my daughter wanted it. She shared it with her friend and they devoured it. It’s a definite win for kids who like colorful cookies and the color pink. I love the way it looks.

Cookie Monster

This is along the lines of a traditional chocolate chip cookie, but with a Teddy Graham on top. I absolutely love chocolate chip cookies, and this had a good ratio of chocolate (a lot) to cookie. It’s very buttery, with a crisp outer layer and soft inside. Tastes like a fresh baked cookie right out of the oven.

Ding Dong

This actually tastes like a Ding Dong. It’s chocolatey goodness surrounding a thin creamy center. It’s definitely all about the chocolate for me, which makes this 100x better than an actual Ding Dong.

Hostess Apple Pie

I remember being a kid and choosing the Hostess Apple Pie from the vending machine. This channels the memory of that sweet apple goodness and glazed pastry crust. Nostalgia all around.

PB&J

What makes this PB&J successful is the extra peanutty topping. Combined with the classic strawberry jelly on the inside, it’s every 80’s childhood memory reborn.

Pop Tart: Frosted Brown Sugar Cinnamon

I remember in the 80s, using the term “brown sugar” for food items was as commonly used as “sea salt” is today. Brown sugar everything and Pop Tarts was quintessential 80s. This cookie does it justice. And as my husband says, “reminds me of baklava”. True.

Rice Krispies Treat

This was a surprisingly good combo. My husband said “it’s something you would have with tea”, mainly because it’s not as sweet as the others and therefore has a “scone-like” quality.

S’mores

Classic flavors that are undeniably delicious together. Less messy than actual s’mores. Bring on the campfire!
