The Cat in the Hat play at The Morgan-Wixson Theatre in Santa Monica entertained my toddler
On Saturday, my family and I watched Dr. Seuss’s The Cat in the Hat play at Morgan-Wixson Theatre in Santa Monica. I didn’t know about this theatre until I was invited to attend and review this play (through USFamilyGuide.com)
The Cat in the Hat is part of the Y.E.S. (Youth Education/Entertainment Series), which is Morgan-Wixson Theatre‘s commitment to engaging young audiences, training young talent, and supporting literacy. (to learn more, click here).
My two-year old is not one to stay still, so I was apprehensive of her ability to sit through the entire play. Surprisingly, she did! It ran for 45 minutes, with a 15 minute intermission. I’ve read The Cat in the Hat book to her in the past, and but it was never her favorite book. I brought the book from home for her to look at during intermission, and she paged through it excitedly repeating “Cat in the Hat, Cat in the Hat!”
The play kept my daughter (and the rest of the children in the theatre) entertained. There were very few peeps from the audience, and it was well received with appropriately timed applause. I was personally impressed by the Sara Finemel‘s expressive movement as The Fish and the creative use of a bubble gun. The choreographed “Disco Dave” scene was very fun, as well as the scene where the Cat (Sergio Christofalo) balanced several items on a ball. The entire cast did a fantastic job, and we met them after the play.
The Cat in the Hat is a play worth watching and a good test to see if your child is ready for this type of entertainment. We haven’t taken my daughter to a movie, so this was a good first step. We look forward to checking out more plays at this venue in the future.
